Ray Bradbury

(Born 1920, died 2012)

Ray Bradbury was born in Illinois. When he was 14, his father moved out from the Mid West to Los Angeles. Ray became interested in Fandom in 1937 and was introduced to Ray Harrihausen and Henry Kuttner amongst other luminaries. He made his entry into the Fanzine scene in 1939 when he started publishing his magazine Futuria Fantasia but it was another two years until he got his first professional story published - "Pendulum" in Super Science Stories. In that year, he met many professional writers including Leigh Brackett who gave him tips.

It is probably fair to say that Ray Bradbury's style has been more on the fantasy or horror side of the genre rather than science fiction. It certainly has a more poetical feel to it than usual within the field. One of his best known books must be Fahrenheit 451.

By and large, Ray Bradbury is best known as a short story writer, most especially the stories in the Martian Chronicles, which describes the attempts of humanity to colonise Mars, and repeatedly failing, in a loosely linked story arc.
