Traitor General

Dan Abnett

2004

Another tale of Gaunt's Ghosts from Dan Abnett, this book is, in my experience, rather unusual in that this tale looks at a planet that has been occupied by Chaos and its foul minions so we get demons and more 'magic' than is usual with the Ghosts, who are usually on the front lines facing the Chaos hordes or other traitors against the Empire of Man.

A Lord General has been captured by Chaos naval units and brought to the occupied world of Gereon where Chaos psykers attempt to break down his mind blocks to access his knowledge of the Imperial Crusade against the Chaos incursions into the Sabbat worlds. Gaunt, and a picked group of the Ghosts have been tasked to go to Gereon and eliminate the general. Twelve men and Gaunt against a world full of Chaos soldiers, Space Marines and demons - not the easiest mission they've ever faced!

Abnett manages to keep up the tension while allowing the team to have moments of fun so the book does not become an unremitting mass of horror.
