Making Money

2007

Moist von Lipwig had won the hearts, if not necessarily the minds, of the inhabitants of Ankh-Morpork when he took over the running of the Post Office.

But now, the Post Office was running like clockwork and Moist was getting bored - the Extreme Sneezing Club was looking better all the time. But he wasn't quite bored enough to willingly accept Lord Vetinari's request to become head of the Royal Mint and it's associated bank in order to bring stability back to an increasingly rickety banking system.

But it's not the Patrician who gets Lipwig in the end, but the wife of the old Chairman. Topsy Lavish sees through him with disconcerting ease and blackmails him into looking after the new chairman of the bank after she had  passed on.

This could have been derivative of 'Going Postal' but Moist, while still the same smart and fast talking conman, has matured and there are a whole host of interesting surrounding characters, from Mr Bent, Chief Cashier who may or may not be more than he seems but is certainly not normal by most people's definition of that  world, to Moist's fiancĂ©e the determined head of The Golem Trust who finds she may not know quite as must about her subject as she had thought.

The story certainly has received an additional fillip from it's publication almost simultaneously with the banking crises in the Real World.
