Lord of Light

1967
When Mankind travels to the stars those that risked their lives establishing the first settlements found that the follow up ships threatened to flood the world that they had created. But how to retain their positions as the creators of their worlds?
In this book the gods run the world, Brahma and Krishna walk the world deciding who will have life after death and who will suffer the True Death. Kali and Shiva the Destroyer sit brooding over the planet, watching out for those who would threaten the gods' grip on technology, for all machines are the gifts of the gods and the gods are jealous!
However there are, even amongst the gods, those who that feel that this is wrong and fight for the right to spread the benefits of technology. Of these the most effective was the one known to his followers as Buddha though he insisted that they merely call him Sam.
Raising rebellion amongst the population of the planet was not easy for the gods were powerful and the fear of the True Death great but there were those who disliked the way they were governed and willing to stand up for their beliefs.
Nor were the gods all of one mind for there were those who could see that their actions were wrong, and there were those who could see a chance for advancement in their own right, for when one is deathless advancement is glacial!
But the path to advancement is not without pain or sacrifice and many must die for their goals to be achieved.
