That device that enables a person to move from here to there without the necessity of having a spaceship to travel in. The specific name comes from the American television series 'Star Trek' where it was largely used to get the crew of the Enterprise to their destination without using their shuttle craft. The failure of the transporter was used to give a sense of risk to particular situations that the crews found themselves in. It can be used in transporter to transporter mode or transporter to point mode.
The transporter is always activated by a crewman on the starship on request from the landing party, or by remote monitoring of the landing party. Despite it entering the Science Fiction canon, Captain Kirk never actually asked Scotty to beam him up.
