This was the name given to the device in the UK Science Fiction series 'Doctor Who'. It was not a method that was much used by the Doctor or his Companions, though it has been part of the background in a number of stories where the alien invaders were attempting to occupy the central transmat control centre in order to take over the world. They were generally limited to planetary range (including Luna orbit) but in 'The Dalek Master Plan', the First Doctor and his Companions got caught in an experimental interstellar transmat beam. The Fourth Doctor, Sarah Jane Smith and Harry Sulivan were intercepted by the Time Lords whilst in transit from Earth to the orbiting Ark to be diverted to Skaro for the Genesis of the Daleks.
Unlike Star Trek's transporter, the Transmat is transmat station to transmat station.
