A replicator is a device that can recreate any other type of item, from the humble diamond all the way up to a multi-megatonne star ship (depending on the size of the replicator). These devices do not generally replicate living creatures though the mess room in Star Trek did use replicator technology in supplying food to the various, and varied, members of the crew of the Enterprise.
One of the alien races fought by SG-1 in the TV series 'Stargate SG-1' was known as Replicators thanks to their ability to build copies of themselves from any materials in their surroundings.
