Originally devised by Isaac Asimov in discussions with John Campbell in the early 1940s. This 'science' was thought up as the guiding force behind the Foundations set up by Hari Seldon to ameliorate the fall of the Galactic Empire.
The science created a set of formulae generally known as the Seldon Equations that were set up to create a new, more stable Second Empire after the passage of a mere thousand years rather than the thirty thousand years of chaos that the formulae forsaw if no amelioration was attempted.
Amongst its main axioms is one saying that the vast bulk of those people being manipulated should be unaware of that manipulation. Another is that the nature of the people being modelled remains relatively standard.
