Many species in Science Fiction have two legs, a body, two arms and a head surmounting the structure. These are your basic humanoid aliens. This is most likely in visual SF such as a movie or TV series - the producers have generally had to get someone in the monster suit after all! Hopefully as computer power increases, the need for real people in these roles will decrease.
On the other hand, Dr Who has always had a fair scattering of non-humanoid aliens.
