In this novel we see the Doctor and his Companions actually travelling between different time zones, a rare event in the Whoverse.

Rory is dropped off in 1917 at b the height of the Great War in order to meet a barmaid on her way home who was fated to become the latest victim of Swallow Woods ('cos it swallows people, not the birds). Meanwhile Amy and the Doctor are in the present where the Doctor has been arrested for the abduction of two young girls and Amy goes in search of the last know victim of the spooky woods (if we ignore the disappearance of the whole town that will happen a few weeks later).

This was a reasonable read though I do wish that Rory gets a chance to have a stronger role.
