The 8th Doctor The Doctor

Background

We learn more about the Doctor's personal background as he interacts with the doctor who had killed him. It is implied that he has Terran ancestry.

Season 26

Doctor Who - The Movie. Quick and simple. This was the only on-screen outing for the Eighth Doctor.
When on his way back to Gallifrey with the remnants of the Master after his execution by the daleks, the Seventh Doctor is diverted to San Francisco at the turn of the Millenium. He was gunned down in a gang related incident and eventually regenerates after an emergency operation goes catastrophicly wrong thanks to his alien physiogamy.
The Eighth incarnation then has to save San Francisco from the Master's interferance with the Time Stream

My thoughts on the character:

Although this regeneration of the Doctor is the first to actually kiss another person, it is impossible to say how much emotional content is been invested in it.
He is more willing than the earlier Doctors to give hints about people's futures. Although there are hints of actual human blood in the Doctor's background, we can't be sure how much this affects his actions.

Initially this incarnation's fate was left undocumented, the viewers only learning about how he regenerated in a short episode set in the Time Wars we learn about in the new series of Doctor Who.

The actor:

Paul McGann is one of the four Acting McGanns. They all appeared together in the television drama The Hanging Gale. Prior to the Doctor, Paul McGann's best known TV role was Percy Topless in The Monocled Mutineer.
His appearance with Richard E. Grant in Withnail And I is a cult classic. He also appeared in Alien 3 and The Three Musketeers.
Paul has maintained his links with Doctor Who in various audio adventures from Big Finish and continued with a successful career on television. He remained the BBC's official Eighth Doctor until the series was successfully regenerated in it's own right.
