Resurrection Day

Brendan DuBois

1999

It's ten years since nuclear weapons had been found on the island of Cuba.

Ten years since the dark days of the Cuban War when American cities burnt.

Ten years since the USSR was reduced to a radiation scarred ruin.

Carl Landry used to be a sergeant in the Army. First as an Advisor in South Vietnam. Then when the troops were required to come back home, as part of the reclamation squads that were trying to maintain stability in a California where the survivors resented the government requisitioning their hard grown crops. And undertaking raids across the border into a quiet Mexico to destroy those who hated what the emergency government was doing to the liberties of America.

Injured in a firefight, Landry is sent to a quiet job editing a military newspaper. So when he leaves the military he gets a job on the Boston Globe. Once there, he spends four years weathering abuse from his colleagues about lightweight reporters. But Landry's a real reporter, one getting more and more irked by the restrictions heaped on the press by emergency legislation still in effect all these years later.

When an old Vet is found murdered, Landry's asked to cover it. At first he thinks it's just another shit job but something about the murder catches his attention. The police write the crime off as a simple robbery with violence, but Landry can see there's nothing missing and the old guy has been killed military style - and who should know better than ex-sergeant Landry how a Special Forces execution is carried out?

Driven by a sense of duty to another old Vet, Landry ignores the warnings of his editor to leave the story alone. And when the story was spiked, he gets really annoyed. But as the story unfolds, he finds himself dragged ever deeper into something that would have deep implications for the whole balance of power of the planet.

Can Landry uncover the mysterious papers that will stop a war that would make the Third World War look like a firecracker? Or will those interested in the status quo be able to shut him up?
