Kurt Vonnegut

(Born 1922, died 2007)

Born in Indianapolis, he was captured by the Germans at the end of World War Two and was a POW during the fire bombing of Dresden, which led to the novel Slaughter House 5. He studied at Universities in Tennessee and Chicago and began writing for various magazines in the early 50s. Vonnegut has been eager to avoid genre characterization, and books like Slaughter House 5 would nowadays be more properly characterised as 'Magic Realism'.
