Until fairly recently, as well as being a Science Fiction author with a growing reputation, Dr Vinge was also lecturing in mathematics at the University of California, San Diego. However, the pressures of pursuing two careers finally took their toll and he now devotes himself full time to writing. Although writing since the mid sixties it was not until the eighties and nineties that his reputation was made, first with the Realtime sequence, but most famously with A Fire upon the Deep and then A Fire upon the Deep.
He was married to Joan D Vinge who also writes Science Fiction.
