Doctor Turtledove has spent all of his life in Southern California. His PhD is in Byzantium History which has informed a number of his fantasy novels.
He has written a large number of stories, the vast majority of which have been based in the Alternate History field. These stories have dealt with many permutations of alternate second world wars and a number of interlinked series based on an American Civil War where the Confederacy won.
