Born Edward Hamilton Waldo, he took his step father's last name and selected a totally new first name when he started writing. Initial hopes of being a gymnast were wrecked by illness. Instead he spent three years at sea where he also began his publishing career with articles for newspaper syndication. His science fiction career commenced in 1939. This lasted for only a few years before another break stopped him publishing until 1946 after which he barely stopped for the next fifteen years, a period that saw the publication of most of the work he is remembered for.
