Despite the American feel of much of Russell's writing his background betrays his British roots. Despite this, he was a consistent contributor to Astounding Science Fiction from 1937 and was the first British writer to breach the walls of that magazine. He used the pseudonyms Webster Craig and Duncan H. Munro on a few short stories and borrowed Maurice G. Hugi's (Brad Kent) name for one other.
Many of his works were rather antiwar, including Wasp and Next of Kin, though they had to also pander to John Campbell's belief in the overall superiority of humanity.
