Ursula Le Guin is based in Portland Oregon. She was first published in 1966 and by 1970 she was being spoken of as one of the most important writers in the field. Her parents were Dr Alfred & Theodora Kroeber. He was a celebrated anthropologist while she was a writer. Her background was academic and she herself focused on the Romance Literature of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance periods. Her father's background in anthropology helped Ursula create the varied backgrounds of her Ekumen polity and the various islands of the archipelagos of Earthsea.
