L Sprague de Camp

(Born 1907, died 2006)

Although beginning his publishing career somewhat beforehand, L Sprague de Camp's major break came in 1939 (must be something in the water that year...:-)). Along with Heinlein and Asimov, de Camp spent the war in the Philadelphia Naval Yards as part of the US Naval Reserve from 1942. Probably his two best known books are "The Wheels of If", fairly recently republished in conjunction with Harry Turtledove's "The Pugnacious Peacemaker" and Lest Darkness Falls both dealling with alternate histories.
