David was born in Glendale, California and graduated from the California Institute of Technology with a BSc in Astronomy in 1973. This was followed by a MSc in Applied Physics in 1978 and a PhD in Space Science in 1981, both from the University of California, San Diego.
Taken as a whole, David's output can be considered as hard science fiction (See here for a definition for Hard Science Fiction).
