Greg Benford graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1963 and gained his PhD from the University of California, San Diego in 1967. He was appointed to the post of Assistant Professor of Physics at the University of California, Irvine, rising to full Professor in 1979. He is an identical twin and has been an editor of a fanzine. Thanks to his background in physics, Greg Benford has always been in the hard science fiction camp.
