The working name of Gregory Dale Bear, the son-in-law of Poul Anderson.
He first began publishing short fiction in 1967 and became a full time author in 1975. It was not until the mid eighties, however, that he became one of the more influential authors on the Hard Science Fiction wing of the genre.
