Troy Horan is one of those Dipplemen who queue daily for a chance for odd jobs in the city of Tikil.

When the Assigner gave him the name of Kossi Kyger, he is delighted - particularly since there was no limit placed on the length of the job. It was a bonus that Kyger ran an exotic pet shop, allowing Troy to use skills grown old in the 10 years of his life in the Dipple.

At first, it was all he could hope for - working with animals from all over the known galaxy and gaining their trust. But soon dark undercurrents beginning to flow round Kyger's.

First Kyger's assistant is attacked while he and Troy are bringing an imported creature back from the Starport. This actually works in Troy's favour when he is given a permanent post with Kyger. Much more seriously, the Sattar Commander who had commanded the death of Horan's world, is killed in mysterious circumstances - and he owns one of Kyger's terran imports!

After being shown the joys of Korwar's protected wilds, Troy is increasingly unhappy with the way Kryger runs his shop. When Kryger is found murdered, he decides enough is enough and taking Kryger's Terran imports with him, he runs for the wilds.
